Just to let you know, Luke's individual interview, which was supposed to be tomorrow has been cancelled, as the social worker has a legal meeting somewhere else.
This gives us a little more time to get our heads around the paperwork at least! We will let you know when it has been rescheduled.

Well, we have completed day 1. It was a long day and pretty intense. We covered all the topics listed below and more! It was great to be in a room of people who were in the same position as us, and we didn't need to explain our situation to anyone! We were fairly brain dead by the end, and as all the training is in Oxford it was a while before we got home. However, it felt good to start the journey more officially, and we were given lots to think about. We talked as groups, listened to the two social workers, and watched video clips. All very helpful.
We met some lovely people, no one really local but very kind and helpful. We look forward to getting to know them better next time!
Next is a couple of interviews, then on to day 2. We still have loads of paper work to do, and now a big blue folder too!

We thought we would let you know what our preparation days hold as we attend each one. We have been given a run down of each day, so here is day 1:

A breeze then really! Should be a pretty intense day but very informative.

If you are praying for us, please pray that we get to know the other families on the course with us. We have heard from others how, the friends you make on these days can become friends for life. They are other people in the same boat, and we are really hoping to connect with them, and increase our network of those who have been, or are going through the same things and emotions as us. There is something special about going through this at the same time as another family, and it would be amazing if someone there also shared our faith!

We leave Taunton this Sunday, so we are ready for Monday without battling traffic (we had to request the day off work). We will update you all on how the day went after that, then the interviews begin!

We are still working through the paper work. We hope we are doing it all right! You are never quite sure what the right thing to write down is, as we have been told we need to include just the right ammount of detail!! Guess we'll soon find out! Thanks for your prayers,

Happy New Year!
This is the year we plan to make lots of progress towards building our family and seeing God do amazing things!
We are going to our first training day soon, and are in touch already with other families that are adopting this year. We are keen to get going, and although we have many big decisions to make, we know we are in the will of God!
We trust you all had a great Christmas, and will let you know soon what training day one will hold.

We have met our social worker and it went well. She is very knowledgeable and had lots of tips and information for us. We felt reassured that the process is finally underway, eventhough there is so much to do!
We have tons of meetings with her, as part of the home study, and homework to complete between each meeting! We are going to be pretty busy, but it is great to feel like God's plan for our lives is comming to pass. We still have lots of uncertainty and details to sort out, but we are stepping out in faith, not really knowing where God is leading us, but following anyway!

We have given an outline of the process in the list on the right, but just to fill you in, once the homestudy (all the interviews) are complete, our social worker puts all the inforation together on one form, whcih is edited lots of times, by us and other social workers. It is then sent to panel, which is where we meet a board of people made up of social workers, parents, adopted adults and medical professionals, who look over our form, talk to us and then we leave the room while they decide what recommendation to make. Can we adopt or not? How many children? From where? What age? The we return to hear their verdict! Their recomendation is passed on to the Decision maker, who gets back to us with a week, to let us know if we are approved. If they say yes, we can then collect together all the papers, and complete the legal side to send to the Sending Country. Then we wait to be matched, which can take a very long time!

The date for Panel is a big day! It seems a long way off yet, but it is nice to have a date!

Well, both medicals are over! Nothing too embarrassing thankfully, but glad to be done. We made it into a very friendly competition between us, and I wont say who won what, but we both came out fine! They will be sent off to our agency's doctor to be checked, then added to the pile of things completed. We hope not to hear about them again, all being well.
We are now trying to get floor laid and painting done in our house, ready for our home visit in a couple of weeks.
Please continue to pray that

• we would feel at ease and be able to talk openly to our social worker when we meet. She is very experienced and an adopter herself, so we are sure she will be very understanding. It is more our own nerves we are worried about!
• Also pray that we are not too tired! We are meeting her the first Monday after we break up, normally the day to collapse and get the flu!

One medical down, one to go!! Then on to our appointment to meet our social worker on December the 22nd. Although not an official visit, she is coming to our home to chat through our reasons and choices regarding adoption. We must say, it feels official! But we know that God is in this with us, and our prayer is that she understands our faith and we have the right words to say without getting too emotional!

We have more paperwork to complete, including a family tree each and a chronology of our lives until this point! I am rubbish with dates but thankfully I have Luke!

We just wanted to add a big thank you to those who have written references for us, and are grateful to have such wonderful friends and family.
Now we wait for the training to begin in January and try to get our house in order for when the home study begins!

We have received more forms to complete, medical appointments to make and have been assigned a social worker.
Please pray that:

• We know God's peace as we answer so many questions!


• That we can make practical arrangements for attending the training


• That we know God's presence as we prepare to complete our home study and meet our social worker

Today family and friends received their letters from our agency asking for references. It feels a little more real and a lot more scary, but we have at least begun! We are looking forward to seeing how God uses this journey to grow us and show us new things about Himself.

Today we sent our forms to PACT, which means we have finally begun the process! It feels strange yet exciting. We think we will start the training and Home study in January, which gives us another couple months to get ready, and continue waiting. I am sure that waiting will become a way of life soon, but it feels good to step closer to our goal of becoming parents.

Well, I feel like I can finally write about the reason for this blog and the journey we feel God is calling us to. Today I am 30! Most people may find reaching an age mile stone a little scary, but I have been waiting for this day for some time ... years in fact!

I am now the right age to adopt, and this is the year we will begin the process. We have felt since the first year we were married that another nation would play a part in our lives, and have known before we were married that adoption would be how God added children to our family, so the coming together of the two seems very right. Of course we are open to God changing things, but we are going to move ahead and allow God to close the door if He so desires.

I know it will be many years before this will be realised, as the process seems never ending, but I have waited, and will wait for God to use us in His time.

Today I feel one small step closer, and know that soon it will feel a little more real. At the moment excitement seems premature, but I am hopeful.

Trip to China.

During half term in February we had the privilege of visiting China. Not the normal location for a week, but it is somewhere we have wanted to visit for a long time and jumped at the chance. We travelled with a regular visitor to China, a retired Physiotherapist who attends our church. She visits children, families and care homes to support those looking after people with physical needs, and we joined her for part of her trip.

We arrived in Hong Kong, greeted by humid conditions and smiling faces! We stayed for two days on a nearby island at a Christian retreat run for full time European or American workers in China. We learnt from these committed workers about the culture and the difficulties that people face in a nation with such a large population and great social need. We spoke with teachers there who explained the challenges and joys they face, and were able to tell them how education was back home!

We experienced traditional New Year celebrations with parades and music. Lanterns and colourful flags adorned the streets, as families travelled home to spend the holiday together. We were introduced to the ‘alive is fresh’ theory quite early on! Several vendors tried to sell us some huge fish, even beheading them in front of us ready for sale! We politely declined! A wriggling carrier bag would have looked a little funny on the ferry! We were off to the centre of Hong Kong so that we could catch a train that would take us into China.

Hong Kong is very westernised, as you would imagine after so many years of British influence. China, on the other hand, is a vast country made up of different dialects, cuisines and traditions. We travelled trough Hunan Province to a city called Changsha. Here we met so many wonderful people, who, even though by our standards they had so little, were so generous in showing hospitality and sharing their life stories with us. Among other things we were able to teach some songs, provide much needed teaching material, and explain a little about our culture.

Not only did we learn how to use chop sticks, how to utter a few words in Mandarin and how to negotiate large crowds, but we were reminded of the needs facing the Chinese people, and how grateful we should be for all we have.

Arriving home we were exhausted yet pleased we had taken the time to see for ourselves this beautiful land and meet such warm people. I’m not sure I will have another half term quite like that one! God really blessed us during our trip, including sparing us from jet lag! China is a country on our hearts, especially those in need, such as the children we met.

Our trip confirmed for us what we have been feeling for some time, that China is a very special place, and as we begin to look at our future and family we believe it will feature prominently!

We have booked our tickets and are ready to go! We are travelling in half term and plan to visit Hong Kong and Changsha. We are hoping to meet lots of people and discover more about this amazing country. He knows what the future holds, and we are looking forward to learning more as we travel.
